A "Toast" to the New Year
I found this idea on the net a few years ago and loved it, but time slipped away from me each year and I never did it. This year I found the perfect book to go along with my toast and it work out perfectly. I saved my new years crown, banner, and noise maker from my home party and put on my crown and hung the banner before I began reading the book. For the lesson, I read the book The Night Before New Year's by Natasha Wing and Amy Wummer.
The book is about a little boy who wants to stay up to bring in the New Year. He and his family participate in all the celebrating traditions, including making new years resolutions and a toast. I explained to the students that a toast is when you tap your class to call attention to what you are going to say. So, we all held up our pretend glasses and said "Ting, Ting, Ting!" (Those of you who know me, can totally see me doing this!). Next, we discussed the word resolution. I explained that a resolution is a promise you make to yourself. We discussed some examples and then we went around the room and each student got to tap their glass (pretend remember) and call us to attention and state their resolution or promise for the new year. Ideally each student would have a new years party hat and blower for this, but I didn't have them this year and they still got into it. After each student had shared their resolution, I showed them my piece of brown paper toast. We talked about what we learned toast meant today and how there is another meaning for the word toast. Each student wrote their resolution on their own piece of toast and it made a really cute door display. It would be much better with die cut letters, but I was being lazy, sorry. My students kept saying that our door was a funny door because "you know, Ms. Jill, toast and toast." I am glad they get my goofiness;) Oh, almost forgot to tell you that in the book the boy falls asleep before midnight so his new year's resolution is to stay up next year. Very cute!
