Story Elements
This is an idea I got from the summer standards training in June. Before reading the book, I posted cards with the following story elements (characters, setting, problem, solution) on my shirt. You could also wear a hat with the cards on them. You need to review what each word means and ask students to be thinking of each as you read. We read this book:
I then divided the class into groups of four assigning each group member a story element to identify and illustrate. When each group was finished, the papers were matted(glued to the middle of a piece of construction paper) and duct taped on the back to form big story maps.

Each group then had the opportunity to share their map with the class. I like to call the Problem of a story the "uh-oh" and the Solution "what makes the uh-oh, okay".
