Sums of 10 Rainbow

Let me begin this post by saying this is totally B.O. (borrowed originality). I did a random Google search for Math facts with a rainbow theme and came across this idea. It is AWESOME! I did it with my class today and it was amazing how they performed. Missing addends are always hard for my students. I loved that in the beginning, my students depended on the rainbow, but the more practice I gave them, I watched them begin to perform without the rainbow. They had memorized the facts....YES!!! I gave the students a page with a number line to 10 at the bottom and four dots going vertically down the page. I helped them to create the rainbow. We used the different colors to connect the two numbers that could be added together to make ten with an arc. For 5 we just started at 5 with purple and looped back up and back down to touch 5. The dots are guidelines so that they can be sure that their arcs don't overlap and cross. After we created the rainbows, I gave several examples of how you can follow the arc to find the answer. I found this coloring page on makinglearningfun.com and programed it with some sums of 10 problems for them to do independently. I also gave them the Saxon Math fact practice from Lesson 96 for additional practice. Please go to this site to see where I found this super idea:

By the way, this can be used for subtraction as well and it doesn't have to be to ten. It works for any sum.
