President's Day

Well, I know I am late posting this, but I like to have pictures to show you. It might be a good idea for you to go back to my posts from last year to get some ideas for each month too. At least then you would get them in time...lol. For this Abe Lincoln craft, you should have the students trace their hand (fingers closed, not spread) and all the way down to their arm on black construction paper. This turned upside down makes your Abe hat(arm) and beard(fingers). You will also need them to draw a rectangle on the black paper. This rectangle will be the brim of his hat. Next give them a piece of white construction paper and have them cut out the face for Abe and glue to what would be the palm. After glueing on the face, they will glue on the brim of the hat and draw the face on Mr. Lincoln. Last year, I wrote this poem to go along with my Lincoln activity. You can probably tell I wrote it because it says the word "just" quite a few times, but I still love it:) Before we made our Abe or wrote our poem we read the book Our Abe Lincoln by Jim Aylesworth. It is really a song written to the tune of the old gray mare. I bought it through the February Scholastic Book Order. This book really teaches lots about Abraham Lincoln in a short amount of time. That is just what I needed because I really don't have time allotted for Social Studies.
For our George Washington portraits, I did a guided drawing activity. I found this step by step guide on the interenet somewhere (sorry, I don't remember the exact site) and just loved it. As the students drew each part with me step-by-step they all were getting discouraged because they said theirs didn't look right, but by the time we finished and colored him in, each one of the students were proud of their work. We have had lots of compliments on these.
*If you are the owner of this step-by-step guide, please let me know so that I can give you credit:)
