Old Mrs. Jill
At the workshop I went to with Donna Whyte on December 8th, she shared her way to play the classic card game Old Maid. She said that she didn't like the way the students always felt so bad about the old maid, so she put a picture of herself and drew gray hair, glasses, etc. to make her look old. She changed the name of the game to "Old Mrs. Whyte." The rules stayed the same, but she asked the students to take care of Old Mrs. Whyte so there wasn't as much negativity surrounding the "Old Maid" card as before. All the students wanted to get Old Mrs. Whyte so they could take care of her. You can print some really good Old Maid cards at http://www.kellyskindergarten.com under Games to Make that you can program with your own vocabulary words or whatever you choose. I personally like the dalmation ones. This card game reminds me of another great tip that Mrs. Whyte shared. Kindergarten and First grade students have trouble holding their cards in their hand. If you take two butter lids and fasten them together with a brad, you have the perfect holder for their cards. The clear ones work best because they can see their cards through them.
