Superman -s
I came across this idea by accident one day when my curriculum coordinator watched my class for me when I had a meeting one day a year or so back. The lesson was verbs that add -s. The rule is that if the sentence has one noun you must add -s to the verb. This is a hard concept for first graders to grasp and especially hard for them to remember. She explained it by calling the -s the "Superman -s". You talk about how superman is one person and he doesn't need any help to do all the superhero feats that he does. When a sentence has one noun, you put the "Superman -s" on the verb. Example: Bob__________(ride, rides) the bus. I made a poster to hang on the wall so that the students call look at it to help them remember the rule. I just love this little trick and I would have never thought of this, but it really clicks with the kids.
